This state approved online course is mandatory for teens applying for their learner’s permit. Teens have the flexibility to complete the online course at their own pace from the convenience of their home.

- Teens can obtain their permit after finishing the first 6 hours of the course and taking the built-in multiple-choice test.
- Teens have the option to take the test multiple times in case they don’t pass the first time.
After passing the test and obtaining the Learner’s Certificate, a teen must visit the DPS office, accompanied by their parent or guardian, to obtain a permit.
Important: When visiting the DPS to obtain a Learner’s permit, a teen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring the following documents:
- Birth certificate, passport, or green card

- Two documents confirming Texas residency
- School verification form (or report card in summer)
7 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Driving Lessons
Teens are required to complete 37 hours of behind-the-wheel driving lessons before they can be issued a driver’s license. This program covers 7 of the required hours – leaving teens to complete the remaining 30 hours with a parent or guardian.
Driving lessons are offered seven days a week with a TDLR certified instructor. Students are given access to the online calendar where they can book their driving lessons based on their own scheduling preferences.
Important: Students can start taking the driving lessons only after they have obtained their learner’s permit.
