DRIVER'S EDUCATION FAQS

 How long must a teenager hold a learner’s permit before applying for a provisional license?

Teenager must hold the permit for at least 6 months and be at least 16 years of age to be able to take the road test and apply for a provisional license.

What age is considered an adult when applying for a driver’s license?

Any one 18 or above is considered an adult in the state of Texas.

How does an adult obtain a learner’s permit in the state of Texas?

Adults between ages 18 to 24 are required to complete a 6 hours course, available online. Once the course and accompanying test has been completed, the adult must visit DPS office with the course certificate to obain the learner’s permit.

What are the requirements for an adult to obtain a driver’s license in Texas?

An adult between ages 28 to 24 is required to take the 6-hour online course to obtain a permit. Adults over 25 are not required to take th 6-hour couse to obtain the permit, but if they dont take the 6-hour course, they will have to take the written test at the DPS office. After obtaining the permit, adults are allowed to practice behind-the-wheel in the presence of an authorized adult. Once comfortable with driving, the adult must take the DPS road test in order to obtain a driver’s license.

what is an IMPACT course?

IMPACT is a free State of Texas required course that must be completed by teens and adults before they can be allowed to take the road test.

What documents do I need to bring with me for DPS road test?

Teens must bring the following documents for the road test: Learner’s permit, Driver’s Education Certificate (DE-964), Teen IMPACT certificate, and Behind-the-wheel 30-hour log. Adults must bring the following documents for the road test: Learner’s permit, Driver’s Education Certificate (ADE-1317), and Adult IMPACT certificate
