In Texas, teens can begin the classroom portion of a driver education course at 14 years old, but they must be at least 15 years old to apply for their learner’s permit. Once these steps are finished, the student must visit a DPS office (such as Rosenberg or Gessner) with a parent, bringing their DE-964 certificate, proof of residency, and identity documents to receive the permit.

Texas law requires teens under 18 to complete 44 total hours of behind-the-wheel training. This consists of 7 hours of professional driving instruction, 7 hours of in-car observation, and 30 hours of supervised practice with a licensed adult (including 10 hours of nighttime driving).
