HOW TO OBTAIN ADULT LEARNER'S PERMIT
For Texas adults, the first step in obtaining a driver’s license is getting a learner’s permit.
In order to get your learner permit, you must:
- Complete the 6-hour adult online driver-ed course.
- Pass the knowledge test built into the course.
After completing the course, you must take the following documents to the Texas DPS to get your permit:
- Birth Certificate, US passport, or Resident Alien Card
- Social Security Card
- Proof of Texas Residency (two documents, e.g. utility bills)
- Driver Ed Completion Certificate (ADE-1371)
Note: Adults over 25 are not required to take the 6-hour course though it is highly recommended. If you are over 25 and do not take the course, you are required to take the permit test at the DPS.
