DRIVER'S EDUCATION FAQS

How long must a teen hold a learner’s permit before applying for a provisional license?

A teen must maintain a learner’s permit for at least six months and be at least 16 years old before taking the driving test for a provisional license.

What age qualifies as an adult when applying for a driver’s license in Texas?

Anyone 18 years or older is considered an adult for licensing purposes.

How can an adult obtain a learner’s permit in Texas?

Adults between 18-24 must complete a 6-hour online driver’s education course and pass the test. They must then take their course completion certificate to DPS to receive a learner’s permit.

What is required for an adult to get a Texas driver’s license?

Adults 18-24 must complete a 6-hour online course before obtaining a permit. Those 25 and older can bypass the course but must take a written test at DPS if they choose not to take it. Once they have a permit, they can practice driving with a licensed adult before taking the DPS road test to obtain a full license.
