Learning how to drive is a skill that can be acquired at any stage of life. It’s better late than never! Whether you are a new driver who didn’t get a chance to take driving lessons, a recent immigrant, or a senior citizen, we can help you prepare for the busy roads of Texas. 

 All of our training is approved by the State of Texas. And we have a diverse staff of male and female multilingual instructors that are experts at training adult students.

HOW TO OBTAIN ADULT LEARNER'S PERMIT

For Texas adults, the first step in obtaining a driver’s license is getting a learner’s permit. 

In order to get your learner permit, you must:

  • Complete the 6-hour adult online driver-ed course.
  • Pass the knowledge test built into the course.

After completing the course, you must take the following documents to the Texas DPS to get your permit:

  • Birth Certificate, US passport, or Resident Alien Card
  • Social Security Card
  • Proof of Texas Residency (two documents, e.g. utility bills)
  • Driver Ed Completion Certificate (ADE-1371)

Note: Adults over 25 are not required to take the 6-hour course though it is highly recommended.  If you are over 25 and do not take the course, you are required to take the permit test at the DPS.

Below are the steps that you must follow as an adult in order to obtain a driver license:

  • Complete the 6-hour online course.
  • Get your learner's permit at the DPS. See above section.
  • Obtain Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate.
  • Take the road test.

The adult learner license in Texas is valid for 45 days. During this period, the adult driver must complete the driving skills test to obtain a driver’s license.

Yes, adults ages 18–24 are required to complete a state-approved 6-hour adult driver education course before applying for a license. Adults 25 and older are not required to take the course, though many still find it helpful and beneficial for building confidence and refreshing their knowledge.

Any first-time driver between the ages of 18 and 24 is required to complete the 6-hour course. Adults 25 and older are not required but may choose to take it voluntarily.

Yes. The 6-hour adult driver’s ed course is available both online and in-person from state-approved providers. My First Drive offers online course that you can complete from the convenience of your home. The test is built into the course as well.

Yes, any student regardless of their age, must have a learner permit before they can start behind-the-wheel driver training.

Yes, first-time adult drivers applying for the permit must pass the knowledge test. The online course offered by My First Drive has the test built into the course. The student does not have to go to DPS to take the test. The online test can be attempted multiple times if needed.

Yes, if you complete an approved online adult driver education course that includes the written exam. Otherwise, you’ll need to take it at the DPS.

Yes. Every first-time driver, regardless of age, must pass the DPS road skills test.

Yes, if the driving school is authorized, you can take Texas DPS road test at a driving school. My First Drive driving school is authorized by DPS to administer the official road test.

Yes. We conduct driving lessons 7 days of the week including weekends.

Yes. Weekend lessons are available on both Saturday and Sunday, running from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM with multiple instructors available throughout the day.

It is never too late to learn how to drive. Whether you are a first-timer, a senior citizen, or a recent immigrant, our driving lessons for adults will fully prepare you for the busy roads of Texas.

Adults 18-24 must take the 6-hour course to get their driver’s license. Adults 25 and over, are not legally required to take the 6-hour course, but we highly recommend it for new drivers. Our adult driver's ed course is TDLR-approved and a perfect way to prepare for the road test.

We have a diverse staff of male and female instructors who are dedicated to our adult students. In addition to English, our instructors are able to teach students in Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali.
