HOW TO OBTAIN TEEN LEARNER'S PERMIT
For Texas teens 15 to 17, obtaining a driver license starts with getting a learner’s license. In order to get your learner permit you must:
- Completed at least six hours of the 32-hour course.
- Pass the knowledge test built into the online course.
After completing the course, you must take the following documents to the Texas DPS to get your permit:
- Birth Certificate, US passport, or Resident Alien Card
- Social Security Card
- Verification of Enrollment (VoE)
- Parent's Proof of Texas Residency (two documents)
- Driver Ed Competition Certificate (DE-964)
- Note: A teen must be accompanied by his or her parent.

HOW TO OBTAIN TEEN DRIVER'S LICENSE
Below are the steps that you must follow as a teen in order to obtain a teen driver license:
- Complete the 32-hour online course.
- Get your learner's license (permit) at the DPS. (See above section).
- Complete at least 14 hours of driving lessons (7 behind-the-wheel and 7 observation).
- Log 30 hours of additional driving with parent or legal guardian.
- Complete Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Online class part of the driver ed is 32 hours as required by TDLR. After completing 6 of the 32 hours, and passing the written test, you are eligible to obtain a learner permit and begin your behind-the-wheel driving lessons.
Texas teens under age of 18 must complete the full 32-hour driver education course, 7 hours of driving lessons, 7 hours of observation, and 30 hours of additional behind-the-wheel lessons with a parent or qualified adult. After meeting these requirements and having held the permit for at least 6 months, teen are eligible to take a road test.

To be eligible for a driver's license in Texas, individuals under 18 are mandated by the law to successfully complete a state-approved driver education course.
As a teen, you need to bring the following to DPS to obtain a permit:
Proof of US citizenship/lawful presence (birth certificate, green card, etc.)
Two Proofs of Texas residency (utilities bill, etc.)
Proof of Identity (birth certificate, etc.)
Social Security Card
Certificate issued by the school after passing the test.
Verification of Enrollment (VOE) or last report card during summertime
Proof of parent’s vehicle insurance
A parent/legal guardian must accompany the teen
